The Illusion of Truth and the Spread of Disinformation

In today’s digital landscape, false information spreads faster than ever before. One powerful psychological mechanism behind this phenomenon is the “illusion of truth effect.” When a lie is repeated often enough, it begins to feel familiar. Our brains, seeking cognitive ease, start to treat familiarity as credibility. Over time, repeated exposure to misleading claims can override our sense of accuracy, leading people to accept falsehoods as fact.

Authoritarian regimes and propaganda networks exploit this effect on a massive scale. By creating echo chambers of repetition, they blur reality, distort international perception, and undermine trust in democratic institutions. Websites that recycle narratives from sanctioned media outlets often play a central role, inserting propaganda into European and global information spaces.

Such platforms disguise themselves as alternative voices or local news portals, but in reality, they amplify disinformation originating from state-controlled media. Their tactics include manipulating facts, citing propaganda sources, and spreading outright lies. Identifying these actors is crucial to protecting democratic societies from manipulation.

According to monitoring of pro-Kremlin media activity, the following outlets have been identified as active spreaders of false narratives:

  • Portugal: Abrilabrilt
  • Slovakia: Jednotneslovensko, Infovojna, Hlavnydennik, Slovanskenoviny, Dennikvv
  • Netherlands: Frontnieuws
  • Moldova: Md.kp.media, Evedomosti

This list is not exhaustive, but it demonstrates the breadth of the problem: false narratives are not confined to one country but are distributed through a web of “Trojan horse” outlets across Europe and beyond.
